About the event

 We Are Here is a Black History Month Show curated by Giselle. This show will be celebrating Black horror characters, films and directors! 

The horror genre for many years has overlooked Black characters, directors and writers. Thankfully it has started to change and we are finally seeing more inclusion!

Dating back to 1968, Duane Jones, who played Ben in Night of the Living Dead, was the first Black actor to be cast in a horror-related role. He was considered a trail blazer for Black people in horror. Doors opened and we started to see more inclusion of Black people in horror but not always as the lead roles. Candyman, for example, was of course groundbreaking back in 1992 and the entire series is also considered historically monumental. Since then we’ve seen even more Black horror characters, directors and films!
